Why you Should have an About Us Page
Why do most people cringe when asked to describe who they are or what they do? It seems like they’d take on trying to solve string theory over having to put together a few solid sentences about themselves. Most people searching the web (especially those looking for a service or product they need) look for the About Page first. Your About Page should create a sense of credibility while showcasing your unique personality. If you’ve omitted an About Page on your website, let us tell you why that’s a mistake and why having an About Us Page is a must.
Don’t Overcomplicate It
A good About Page is simple, to the point and relays a few key details. That said, just because your text is simple, doesn’t mean it’s good. Take a look at the following points and see if you’re making any of these mistakes.
You don’t have an About Page at All
You may have great content, a nice webpage header and a smooth looking WordPress theme but what you don’t have is an About Us page. Maybe you decided not to include one because you thought it was cliché or you went full panic mode because while trying to create one. Or, maybe you threw your audience even more of a loop: you called it “There’s More!” or “Here’s The Scoop” or “The Deets.” The words of usability expert Steve Krug ring true here: don’t make me think. Your website visitor doesn’t want to click on your “The Deets” page wondering if that’s where they find out who you are, what you do and why I should consider you and/or your services. Every site needs an About Page. Don’t reinvent the wheel. Call it About. Done.
Your Credentials Are Non Existent
Let’s say that someone wants to link you on their blog because your content is, as they say, fire. Respectable content/blog writers will want to introduce you so this means having your full name appear in your About Page. And, hey…no cheesy alias like, “The Content Gladiator.” Your name. As in, what others can introduce you as. That said, it doesn’t have to be your real name. Some people would rather keep their real names private and there’s nothing wrong with that. Many people work and write under professional pseudonyms. You can too. Additionally, list your credentials. If you are a certified holistic nutritionist, put that in your About Page as well as list any other credentials to help boost your credibility like other certifications, awards, etc.
Let’s See That Face – Maybe?
Okay, putting up a photo of yourself on your site doesn’t seem like the greatest idea right? We understand. Let’s make this step optional, although there are still good reasons to put your award winning smile up there. If someone is looking to hire you, refer you or even pass your content on to some of their own readers, they feel more comfortable if they have a sense of who you are. When there’s a face to put to a name to, you become easier to remember. That, combined with well written content can make all the difference.
Boring Writing
This one may hit a nerve so let’s put it out there and move on. For whatever reason, when people sit down to write an About Page, they’re creativity and great writing voice goes right out the window. To fix this problem:
- Use your own writing voice.
- Be very meticulous about removing any corporate jargon.
- Don’t be afraid to inject a little humour; if you can pull it off
- Don’t be afraid to go into nerd territory, if that’s who you are.
- If you avoided posting a photo, this is all anyone has to go on to have an idea of who you are. Make it you. Make it count.
